Introduction:
Birthdays off, ping-pong tables and Friday drinks; the modern-day workplace makes a great case for employee engagement passed off as culture. Coupled with comments such as ‘everyone gets on well’ and even ‘the culture is great here’, it’s easy to see how prospective employees end up starry-eyed over these seemingly perfect organisations. 

Engagement and culture are very different. And whilst, much like effective advertising, concessions such as bean-bag breakout areas initially draw you in, they often fall short of sustaining you in a new career. Genuine organisational culture, understood as the values, beliefs, norms and expectations of behaviours play a pivotal role in fostering positive employee satisfaction, motivation, and ‘intention to stay’ amongst other variables.
