Shaun McCarthy had his opinion piece about “Why mums can make the best leaders” published in The Sydney Morning Herald. Following the recent media around Jacinda Ardern, Shaun talks about why motherhood can be a real asset that instils valuable leadership skills.
"Jacinda Ardern has become only the second world leader to give birth while in office. In just the first of her modest six-week maternity leave, she addressed her nation via Facebook live from the comforts of her couch – announcing new policy whilst simultaneously feeding her newborn.
She has instantly become the example for working mums around the world. Now, as she returns to office, a mere month and a half after she gave birth, she prepares to embrace the dual role that thousands of Australian women uphold across the country: a leader who also happens to be a mother.
There have been those questioning if being a working mum will negatively impact her effectiveness as a leader. In more than 40 years’ consulting, it is in my experience that motherhood can be a real asset that instils valuable leadership skills.
