How to change Culture in 4 phases

Culture is a big thing for organisations to change and one of the questions we get asked the most is “how do we go about culture change?!”. Dominic Gourley talks to David Byrum about fundamental principles for Culture change programs

Constructive Culture Journey


Understand “Why” – Discover and align

  • Define initial purpose & vision
  • Review business issues, conditions, environment, and people – identify specific challenges you want to change
  • Facilitate Executive Team education and feedback sessions
  • Discover and align that everyone has a clear understanding of the purpose

 

Build a Baseline – Enlist and engage, measure and analyse

  • Launch a core “Change team” to facilitate change
  • Define key business outcomes and supplementary questions
  • Communicate key outcomes and the purpose
  • Launch Culture & Climate diagnostics - Measure where you are today and where you want to be (ideal culture)
  • Analyse link of culture to business outcomes

 

Create Change – Debrief results, build capability and initiate planning

  • Share and debrief results – Executive Team, Change Team and Organisation
  • Reinforce connection to purpose & vision
  • Develop an action plan and involve key stakeholders
  • Select a few change initiatives which will give you the biggest returns and quick wins

 

Learn & Sustain – Finalize plans, implement, learn and adjust

  • Implement quick wins and medium-term action plans
  • Plan formal reviews of how the change is going – learn and adapt along the way
  • Re-measure organisational culture every 18 months – 2 years
