Dealing with Subcultures

Published on 11 Feb 2020

In this episode of Culture Bites, we answer a listener’s question about dealing with subcultures - multiple organisation sites and units, diverse roles and people identifying with their team but not with the wider organisation.

Letter from listener;

“I’m an avid listener of your Culture Bites podcast, I’ve learnt a lot through your podcast as I’ve come from a community development background and am now in an internal facing position trying to improve the culture of the organisation. My organisation is a local government that has 750 employees across 30 sites. I’m finding local government such a diverse and complex organisation as it ranges from librarians, rubbish collectors and every thing in between. There are multiple sub cultures and staff receive different levels of information and some are office bound while others are out in the field not checking emails at all.

The data shows that we are a Passive/Defensive place. The data also shows most people are engaged with their work and with their direct team , but few feel part of the whole organisation. My question to you is, how do you develop a cohesive culture in such a diverse organisation with limited resources?”
